Is Taekwon-do for you?

how fit do I have to be?

You can start Taekwon-do at any level of fitness and build up. Because there is a lot of individual practice and line work in the early stages, you don't need to feel embarassed if you are unfit. It will come! However if you are already fit you will be surprised what a good workout a taekwon-do session can be. Watching people do it, it can sometimes not seem that hard, but Taekwon-do uses lots of muscle groups as well as building aerobic fitness and intentional breath. As you progress and your technique improves, you will find that you use more and more energy to execute the moves properly. It's a great workout that doesn't feel like a workout while you're doing it!

What age is it suitable for?

Taekwon-do is great for burning off kids' energy as it requires energy and concentration. Young people find it builds their confidence. Adults returning to exercise find it helpful as you can start at any level and compete with yourself to build your skill and fitness. Our class has had students from age 8 to 68!

We currently only train children aged 8 and over because of the session time, it is hard for young children to concentrate late on a school night.  However, if you are looking for classes for children under 8 years, our parent club runs a range of brilliant children's classes at three venues in Shropshire.

do i need to be confident to fight?

The short answer is no. Firstly, Taekwon-do is not all about fighting, most of the sessions involve building skilled moves. Secondly, because everyone works through the same syllabus, but at your own pace, Taekwon-do is great for building your confidence over time. You can feel less conspicuous during line work, and build your social connections during partner work. Our class has helped students with anxiety and with a lack of physical confidence.

What happens in classes?

Classes involve a mixture of practicing skills (fundamental moves), line work (doing moves together as a group), learning patterns(moves in a sequence), practicing self defence techniques, learning how to fight (spar) and building your fitness. These are rotated in lessons, so sometimes you will do all of them, sometimes there will be a focus on one area.

Taekwon-do has a very structured syllabus, with gradings which include all of these areas as well as theory including some Korean words! Because it is so structured, you can easily measure your progress which is very satisfying.

Ludlow Classes

I am an instructor for Universal Taekwon-do, and run their Ludlow classes.

Classes take place at Ludlow Leisure Centre (Teme Leisure) on Bromfield Road in Ludlow, on Tuesday and Friday nights from 7pm until 8pm.

Most students attend both sessions but some students attend one session a week.

We're a small and friendly group of mixed ages, with students from age 11 upwards.

We have students from white belt all the way up to black belt! Click here for more details.

Universal Taekwon-do

Our classes are part of Universal Taekwon-do - a Shropshire based taekwon-do school with classes across Shropshire.

The school prides itself on teaching authentic ITF Taekwon-do, and making it accessible to students of all ages and abilities.

The club was created by Master James Kessler (7th Dan) over twenty years ago, and he is the principal instructor for the school so we are able to draw on his knowledge and experience. Students within the club can access classes at any of the Universal TKD venues. Find out more here.
